1. Rock is a form of music that uses bass, guitars, drums and lyrics to support a central idea or cause. Lots of rock deals with sex and drugs, so for all you "metal heads" or "punk" dorks out there who say rap is meaningless and sucks, rock can, too. Lots of rock songs point out the flaws of society, Like most of the songs by System Of A Down and Rise Against. There are lots of subgenres of rock so take your pick, it's all awsome. Personally, I like classic bands like AC/DC, and Billy Joel. I also like KoRn and DevilDriver, so go figure.

And seriously, if you're going to place a stereotype or try and rip on any type of music, listen to it and remember that it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

2. a usually hard material made of natually occuring elements.
1. "Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk it's still rock and roll to me!" -Billy Joel, Still Rock And Roll To Me

"Why must we kill our own kind?" - System of a Down, BOOM!

"Welcome to the jungle, it gets worse here everyday. Learn to live like an animal in the jungle where we play!" - Guns and Roses, Welcome to the Jungle

2. lime stone, slate, granite, schist, etc etc

A form of music, and probably the most well known. Rock started in the '50s as "rock n' roll", and was made popular by musicians such as Elvis Presley and Little Richard. It was mainly inspired by the blues and jazz, so it would be upbeat and appeal to young people. Rock has been instrumental in the history of America, and without it, we wouldn't have our society as we know it. Rock has evolved largely over the years. In the '60s, it was the common music of hippies, THE counter-culture of that decade, and was made even more popular by the arrival of British bands such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. In the '70s, it went even further as the music of rebellion, and split off into various subgenres, such as psychedelic rock, progressive rock, punk rock, and early heavy metal. The '80s introduced MTV, music television, as well as furthering heavy metal, which spawned its own offspring, such as NWOBHM, thrash metal, and glam metal, also known as hair metal. In the '90s, alternative rock and grunge took over the radio, MTV, and the charts. Sadly, in the new decade, the 2000s, rock is being thrown off by rap, pop, and R&B, none of which are nearly as good. Unfortunately, today's youth would rather listen to shitty, repetitive, synth-laden pop and rap than real music. Rock isn't doing too well by itself, either. Most rock bands nowadays suck, as they also write overproduced shit. The question I have is, "What in the fuck happened to good old-fashioned rock n' roll?"
Stupid 12-year-old wannabe gangster: YO ROCK IZ DEAD, GET WIT DA TIMEZ YO!!!!!!!!11111!!!!1111 YALL NEEDZ 2 LISSENZ 2 SUM RAP!!!!!!!!!!!11111
Me: Learn how to speak English you dumb shit. And no, just because rock is slumping in CD sales this year doesn't mean that it's "dead". Rock will always be better than rap because:

1. They sing, rather than just talk about a bunch of bullshit that no one with an IQ of 100 or over wants to listen to.

2. They play instruments.

3. They have always been, and always will be, the all-time best-sellers of the music business.

Wannabe gangster: STFU DOOD, ITZ GAY AND U KNO IT!!!!!111

Me: Oh really? Well, you should know that not all music is about being a "gangsta". It's not dependent on synthesizers and not all of it has to be stuff you can dance to in some shitty nightclub. You getting me here?

Wannabe: YO, THIS SHYT IS GAY. IMA GET MA BOYZ HERE AND WE Z GONNA FUCK UZE UP!!!!!!!!!!1111111

Me: (sarcastically) Oh, I'm so scared. (grabs the little shit by the head and drop-kicks him)

Originally created by the black community in the mid-1900s, it was a combination of Jazz, Blues, R&B, etc and was called rock & roll, named after the motion of sex. Evolved greatly through the 60s and 70s (a large part of which was due to The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones). In the 70s, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath introduced heavy metal. Today, rock has branched off into several categories including: Alternative Rock, Adult Alternative, Punk/ Skater Punk/ Garage, Emo, Metal, Hard Rock, Soft Rock, Classic Rock, Arena Rock, Motown, Doowop, Folk Rock, Industrial, Thrash Metal, Nu Metal, Psychedelic Rock, Progressive rock (broken up into German and Italian proggressive), Disco (hard as it is to accept), New Wave, Grunge, and Indie Rock. Evolved greatly during the first and second British invasions (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Kinks, The Cure, Duran Duran, Eurythmyics, The Who, Boy George, The Birds, Chad and Jeremy, Deep Purple, The Troggs and The Sex Pistols). Took off at Woodstock, in Bethel, New York on August 15th, 16th and 17th, 1969. the most famous rock concert of all times. Made another turning point in the 80s with such bands as Mötley Crüe (technically formed 1979), Guns & Roses, Metallica, and Poison. (On a side note, John Lennon was also killed in the 1980s). However, the 80s marked the beginning of the end for rock - MTV. MTV, music televison, was originally around to promote rock (the first music video it aired, aptly enough, was "Video Killed The Radio Star"). However, as time went on, MTV shifted its focus to rap, and whatever rock was left was rock/rap hybrid: Limp Bizkit, Korn, POD, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, etc. This later became nu metal. As nu metal gained huge popularity, genuine rock was left in the dust, and the networks realized that rap was the way to go. Now, rock is left with Coldplay and The Killers as its powerhouses, who, frankly, don't deserve the name, especially as they're becoming more and more overplayed. Rap is replacing it, apparent to residents of Philadelphia and the Delaware valley, who woke up on morning to find that Radio 1 had replaced Y100, an alternative rock station, with ANOTHER rap station. As if we needed more. Save rock!
I mourn the loss of rock.

Sub-genre of popular music characterised by a regular beat and the use of melodic and harmonic strains derived largely from the blues and country music. Originally, in the 1950s, it fell into one of two categories - Rock 'N' Roll (rhythm and blues tailored for a white audience) or Rockabilly (similar but with the country/hillbilly influence to the fore.) Before long new variations of the form began to emerge and, considered as a whole, have been the dominant kind of popular music up to the present time.
If it's nu-alterna-punk-emo-indie music...why does it sound like rock?
