The phrase derives from the movie "Elf," and is often used to keep telemarketers from calling a person's house, although this is not the phrase's only use. A twist between a prank call and an answering machine, the phrase is popular on sites such as MyLifeIsAverage.com.
NOTE: "Buddy the elf" is said as the name of the receiver, not the caller.
