A part which serves no useful purpose.

In the original series of Star Trek Captain Kirk was referred to as Captain Dunzel by another Starship Commander. This was because the Enterprise was being operated by the M5 Computer and not the crew of the Enterprise. Because Kirk did not have a crew to command he did not have a useful purpose.
