A publicly-used roadway built on private land, usually to get around an obstacle that prevents a road from being built on the surveyed public road allowance.
The first road surveys of townships in the colonial provinces of Canada were inaccurate, requiring road crews to create forced roads that deviated from the surveyed public road allowance onto private property.
