Lol

Short for "laugh out loud". It is supposed to be used for the purpose of showing others that you liked what they said to the point that it makes you laugh intensely but as usual it has been mistakenly used on the internet (and mostly by teenagers) who just apply it to almost every one of their sentences.

At the moment it's meaning has been altered due to what is mentioned above and it should be considered as a mixed expression of 1.liking, 2.surprise, 3.question, 4.undefined emotion and 5. when you face something unbelievable.

It is definitely not as strong as laughing out loud, it is a common abbreviation, a tad closer to funny but it can be used pretty much everywhere (ok don't use it if you are reffering to something sad, that is going to be uncool).
1. --I bought this little cute cotton dolphin for my little nephew when i went to the mall today.

-- Lol that sounds lovely
2. --And as i was out for a small walk the other day, i met Tom, i haven't seen that guy since we were together in the army.

-- Lol, nice man, i would like to catch up with him too, someday
3. --I decided to change my profile picture yesterday

-- Lol, why did you do that?
4. -- I was talking to Lisa about my ruined date and she was like lol.
5. --Lol, you gotta be shitting me.

-- Naa, everything i said so far is completely true

LOL diffusion

When "LOL" is used as qualifier used to diffuse tension at the end of a particularly serious statement. The user of this qualifier usually anticipates a negative reaction (the nature of which is either anger or awkwardness) from the listener, and uses "LOL" as a sheild to prevent any anger or offense from being reflected back toward them.
After posting a particularly passive aggressive Facebook post, user them comments on own post:

"PS.. This has nothing to do with any particular person, or anything else. If you are upset about this post then you may need to seek out and fix your issues. Lol"

Reader then takes offense.....

User says, "I said LOL, you can't get mad. I used LOL Diffusion!"
