pick anything like a movie, something you just ate or did and describe it as gnarley bananas, implying it was awesome, gnarley, extreme or just fun. e.g. did you just see that guy backflip on his skateboard? that was gnarley bananas

On the offical "Fonzie Coolomatic Cool Rating Machince" the Fonzie macine rates your from -10 Fonzie's or simply put 10 Chachi Arcola's. And goes all the way to 10 Fonzie's. Gnarly means at least 15 fonzies, putting the "Fonzie meter" into the red and is know as Uber Fonzie.

gnarley events: skateboarding competition (good way).
hurricane devestates town (bad way).
Family takes week vacation in cabo san lucas. (good way)
Gang activity ravels neighborhood. (Bad way)
