sophomore slump

n. Disappointing follow-up to a successful first record album. The term can be applied to a follow-up to a band's first major label release, rather than exclusively to the first release in any format, and can refer either to album sales or critical reception. Sophmore slumps often occur when a band or singer experiences far greater popularity than expected, and is pressured to release new material quickly in order to stay in the public spotlight, or when expectations of follow-up releases are simply too high to be met, due to the success of the first album. A sophomore slump can also occur when a band is ridiculously overhyped and sells millions of records to scenesters and posers, but by the time the second album rolls around even the scenesters and poser have figured out that they actually suck.

Hey, you ever heard of Vampire Weekend? Those guys are a sophomore slump just waiting to happen.

Slumburbia

1. A derisive term for older suburbs that are declining into poverty. The word is a combination of "Slum" and "Suburbia."

2. The bleak future for many aging American suburbs.

3. What happens when people refuse to take urban planning seriously.

Slumburbia is almost always found in large metro areas. As middle-class residents move farther and farther away from the urban core, the closer-in suburbs start to deteriorate. Property values fall leading to reduced local tax revenue, decreased public services, declining schools and increasing crime, especially gang activity. This vicious circle continues for years until the suburb itself is no longer distinguishable from the large city it borders.

Examples of Slumburbia: Hamtramck, Michigan; Somerville, Massachusetts; Camden, New Jersey; and Compton, California.

My hometown is turning into Slumburbia. You can hear gunfire there almost every night.

Slumlord

A person who rents out a property that is substandard & refuses to make major repairs unless issued a notice of uninhabitability. Even after receiving the notice they make minimal attempts to make repairs, ex: putting weather stripping on doorway instead of fixing foundation to remedy huge gap in door. Usually he rents out multiple properties for financial gain with at least one of them being an illegal rental. The slumlord often resides in a giant new build down the street.

I had to get a constructive eviction because the slumlord didn't make necessary repairs.
