short for independent music.
contrary to what most people say about indie kids, they're actually very nice people.
there are a few indie kids who look down on others because of their "exclusive tastes in music and culture".

but generally, most indie kids are "indie" because they are INDEPENDENT and dont care what others think. they're nice people who will hold a conversation with anyone about anything, not just music.
not all "indie kids" have wavy hair and wear converse. indie is whatever you want it to be. its about being true to yourself and the things that you truly enjoy.

there is no way to BECOME an indie kid. indie is INDEPENDENT, so just be yourself :)

A word tossed around in the indie community saying that something is not necessarily mainstream in the common sense, but is mainstream within the indie community itself.

One of those indie chicks who acts all supreme and crap, she has a bandlist on her myspace that's miles long, most of the bands she hasn't even listened fully to, and she claims that you cannot like a band if she likes it, because she is more indie than you.

Indie Kid

an indie kid isn't any of those things. They're really just nerds who aren't nerdy. What I mean by this is that they don't have an unhealthy LOVE of school (they are smart, so their grades will be decent, but they don't go to freaky color coded flashcard frenzies). They dress however they want, whereas regular nerds just fail at dressing like everyone else. They listen to indie music (obviously) but they don't always brag about it. If they wear jeans, a tshirt, and converse it's because they FEEL like it, not cause they're trying to be indie. They hang with other indie kids, nerds, and normal people.

The kid you see listening to their ipod while standing next to their frantically studying friends, then witness an hour later actively involved in some nerdy debate, that's an indie kid.

Indie

Mainly consisting of high school and college students, Indie is a current and very popular social group among the unpopular social groups.

Usually characterized by local or obscure music, eclectic clothing from thrift stores or the nearest Urban Outfitters, and constant bickering between one another on which bands are becoming too mainstream.

If you are considering becoming an indie kid, be prepared for many long arguments over various books, movies, music, paintings, and obscure pop culture icons between other members in the group. Oh, and be prepared for hearing loss, as you will be expected to attend many local shows and concerts.

"Hey Jane, how was the Cavil At Rest show last night?"

"It was good, but their newest song sounds so mainstream,, Like they are changing their sound so they will get a record deal"

"Isn't that a good thing though? I mean, doesn't every band hope for a record deal?"

"Not Indie. Its about the music, not the fame."
