When your lover kisses you with a mouthful of wine, preferably champagne, and passes you a sip; thus a French sip.

She drank from her champagne glass, kissed me and gave me a French Sip.

Metaphorically, a person who only sips the broth but does not consume the more substantial part of the soup.

The act of drinking a full beer while still at the bar before walking through a crowd. The purpose of the "pre-emptive sip" is to prevent spilling. Also known as a "safety".
