Those morons in the movie Idiocracy are very down to earth.
You remember how one of the Greek Dictators (they called them “tyrants” then) sent an envoy to another Dictator to ask his advice about the principles of government. The second Dictator led the envoy into a field of grain, and there he snicked off with his cane the top of every stalk that rose an inch or so above the general level. The moral was plain. Allow no preeminence among your subjects. Let no man live who is wiser or better or more famous or even handsomer than the mass. Cut them all down to a level: all slaves, all ciphers, all nobodies. All equals. Thus Tyrants could practise, in a sense, “democracy.” But now “democracy” can do the same work without any tyranny other than her own. No one need now go through the field with a cane. The little stalks will now of themselves bite the tops off the big ones. The big ones are beginning to bite off their own in their desire to Be Like Stalks.

Down to Earth Person: "I'm not paying $92 for that sweatshirt just because it's designer! That's crazy!"

In the context of non-Astronaut Earth-dwellers, this is a quality which refers to someone who is grounded without being in trouble. They have no choice but to consume and trust the information received from their senses. They attempt to understand what you're attempting to communicate and attempt to assure you that they are able to & capable of attempting to make sense of it. In contrast, those who hail from planetary bodies other than Earth, yet exhibit the same qualities, are often regarded as "alien".

Used by today's kids as a compliment. The definition of the word should therefore be changed to something along the lines of, 'The yearn to have everything your spoiled ass has ever wanted, but to simultaneously be seen as someone who's genuinely compassionate' in short, pseudo-compassionship.

I feel like down to earth means a humble, chill, and most of all honest person, in some circumstances , has a hippyish vibe . Probably someone who smokes weed, goes to tons of music festivals, listens to indie music and all that, you know.
" I'm not buying that shirt, it's way too expensive, I can get something better at a thrift store, anyway I'm pretty poor."
