Many people tie preps with the word slut and other insults but the true prep fashion is inspired by school uniforms, conservative sport wear, and other similar foundations. The basic prep will wear a polo and khaki pants which is not slutty. You could think of this fashion as the kind of clothes accepted in a country club, which requires conservative clothing.
The fashion that is considered prep fluctuates in pre-teens and younger teens who often obsess over name brands such as hollister and abercombie. The stores have prep inspired clothing BUT the clothing items that have the store's name across are NOT preppy. They are under a different class that has not been created yet.
As many teens get older the style begins to become more personalized and less traditional. Often girls will wear an preppy item with an edgier item, which creates a balanced outfit that is becoming very popular. This modernized and edgier prep can be called chic. Preppy Guys on the other hand wear polos, button ups, khakis, and pastels. They can mix a preppy shirt with jeans to make it less country-club like. Prep guys care about their appearance and make their outfits neat and some may be more preppy by wearing scarves and pea coats.
Preppy is conservative not slutty so ripped jeans and tight shirts are NOT preppy. Preps are not obsessed with pink and many are intelligent. =

When some one is referred to as a prep, they usually reside on the East Coast; around the tri-state area. New England, regions of New York and New Jersey. They do not subject themselves to wear Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Armani Exchange, American Eagle Outfitters. They wear Brooks Brothers, occasionally RL & Lacoste, Emporio Armani, etc. DO NOT GET THEM CONFUSED WITH GUIDOS. They attend preparatory schools or go to exclusive public schools such as Stuyvesant High School. They usually come from a long line old money; they can be thought of as patricians. They reside on the Upper West Side or Upper East Side around Madison, 5th Avenue, Lexington, etc.

A girl that wears knee high socks, sweaters, plaid skirts and buckled shoes. Not to be confused with someone that wears short shorts, brand name t-shirts(or tank-tops), and wears gallons of make-up. This would actually be called a slut, hooker, whore, or popular girl. If someone goes to your school(and your school isn't a prep school) then they are NOT preps.

A male or female who generally attends a private school or attended a private school as a child. Preps typically come from wealthy families, but are not flamboyant with their money. This term origininated in the Northeastern United States. Preps play tennis, golf, lacrosse and field hockey. Preps often attend country clubs and are well-mannered. Despite popular belief, true preps do NOT wear abercrombie, hollister, and american eagle, they wear Polo, lilly pulizter, lacoste and other such brands.
That prep over there in the lilly dress went to Hotchkiss for tennis and is on her way to Princeton. She grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut but she vacations in Nantucket.

A prep is NOT someone who shops at A&F and not just someone who wears collored shirts. Prep is a lie style. You can't just decide to be it one day. You are born into it.

Someone who likes to wear bright happy clothes. Someone who likes to smile, hang out with her friends, laugh. Someone who trys in school, but isn't perfect. Someone with lots of friends who she loves very much.
A lot of people appose preps before they get to know them. They're are mean types of preps, sure. But not all of them are like that.
