Assault Weapon

Anything you can hurt someone with. I can take my shirt off, wrap it around your neck, and choke you with it, that makes it an assault weapon. I could throw a teddy bear at your head really hard, that makes it an assault weapon. I could intentionally give you a paper cut, that makes the paper I used an assault weapon.

Frequently misused to describe semi-automatic weapons.

That's an assault weapon! You shouldn't be allowed to own that!

What, this? An AR-15 only fires one bullet at a time dude.

Term coined by Violence Policy Center head Josh Sugarmann to describe cililian semiautomatic firearms with a military or fearsome appearance, yet no more lethality than lesser weapons. Derived from the term "assault rifle", which means a fully automatic, selective fire rate firearm used my military and police personnel.

"Assault weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully-automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons --anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun-- can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons."

An amorphous term coined by those who support gun control. Applied to semi-automatic weapons that cosmetically resemble fully automatic firearms.

When gun manufacturers began making these so-called assault weapons without the things that made them look menacing, the gun grabbers cried that a "loophole" was found. Well, duh...they would be the last to see that the changes were cosmetic in nature.

assault with a deadly weapon

If you are not being threatened with violence then pointing a gun at the other person would constitute assault with a deadly weapon (felony) and brandishing a firearm. If you didn't have a concealed carry permit, you would also be guilty of carrying without a permit (first offense misdemeanor or felony, second offense felony). You would be arrested, lose your gun, go to jail, probably for more than a year, and lose your right to keep and bear arms. Exact penalty would depend on plea bargaining, the quality of your attorney and what the judge had for breakfast.

Some fool starts yelling at you after a fender bender and you pull out your glock and he calls the cops it will probably be assault with a deadly weapon.

A term for a rifle made up by the media to make rifles sound scary. Try putting the word assault in front of anything that could hurt you when the wrong person uses it. Now it sounds scary, right? You're on your way to becoming a news reporter.

I'll shoot you with my assault rifle!
I'll beat you with my assault bible!
I'll hit you with my assualt car!
I'll punch you with my assault fists!

A term created for the 1994 "Assault Weapons Ban," which banned firearms based on appearance, brand name, and features not related to firearm function. A proper definition of this word requires the entire 1994 act, so feel free to look it up.

History:

The term "assault weapon" has no industry or military definition. It was created to give a single name to all of the firearms politicians wanted to ban in 1994. Opponents of the 1994 ban refer to it more accurately as the "Semi-Auto" ban.
