Essentially, they brainwash people into obeying them without hesitation, then use said people to ruin their own life without realizing it.
My congressman tricked congress into passing a bill that legalized having religious books in schools. Now they're panicking that other religious people are also putting their books in schools. What a manipulative fool.

Many times in order to get a viral trend started, a person or company will try to create the illusion that everyone who has not yet heard about it is late to the party.
