The act of attempting to do something that has no chance of success. Everyone knows that packing a banana for lunch, trip, car drive sounds like a good idea, but is impossible to accomplish without it getting bruised, brown and damaged, even if it's never touched.

The act of doing something completely hopeless.

Steve was trying to make his wife happy but he was just packing bananas. Everyone knows wives are never happy.
