It is a portmanteau of “Sooner,” the school’s official nickname, and “Goon,” referencing the large fan base of drunk, uneducated idiots who would rather fight you than deal with criticism of their team, as well as the large number of criminals recruited to play for their men’s sports teams.

What a Spud would be if they could ever grow up and get some self esteem and class. A Gooner is a supporter of the best team in North London and a club with real history and class.
