Livonia Police once used NIL so much over their radios that a citizen picked up on it while listening in on a police scanner. Livonia Police tried to say it meant 'Not In Lein' but their use didn't match up. They stopped saying NIL over the radio and made their police frequency private (even though it complicates communications with surrounding police agencies) and started using 'oh four' instead, which is an old police report numerical code for African Americans. Oh four plug Isa black male and oh four socket is a black female.

"Radio, we've got a NIL on the ditch (I-96) heading east to Detroit".
