An expression used to convey the utter hopelessness of a situation, given that everything has gone wrong with little or no chance of salvaging.
Biff: "Hey, Melvin - you know how you and your twin brother have been swapping girlfriends every other week?"
Melvin: "Hellz yeah...pretty sweet, huh?"
Biff: "Not really...someone spilled the beans, and now your girlfriends know."
Melvin: "OH NOES!! The s*** has hit the fan!!"

hit the ground running

Finding yourself in a situation that is fast-paced, and physically overwhelming. Often that feeling is heighted by a sense of mass confusion, and personal ineptness. Term was first coined to describe the "D-Day" invasion of World War 2. When Allied ships inflitrated Nazi shores, and infantry troops literally had to "hit the ground running", to keep from getting shot.
