Okay, just to get the record straight a prep is someone who likes, polo, lilly, lacoste, ect. They do not like a & f, or age, they are wannabe stores, preps like ribbons, in their hair and around their waists. They are not stupid nor slutty instead very classy. The are not mean either, they are nice and respect all groups (Goth, punk, ect.) They come from well off family’s and usually belong to nice country clubs. They like playing tennis, golf, field hockey, ballet ect. And they do not have to come from new England that is just a popular place for them. Most go to expensive private day schools, or boarding schools. Get good grades. And will end up going to a good collage. It does not matter what color their hair is it can be blond, red or brown! They like polo’s, bright colors (pink and green) nice jeans, sevens, or citizens, they enjoy wearing juicy couture and uggs to be comfy. They tend to shy away from malls but will go to nemins and saks and nords, as well as stores the the Polo store ect. They love pearls and lofers!

Preppyness (yes, a its a word) is not a theme or fad, its a lifestyle, one that has been passed down in well to-do families along the east coast. Primarily these states are Maryland and Massachusetts. In Maryland, the most preppiest cities are; Bethesda, Potomac, and Chevy Chase. The preppies are only considered preppy if they attend the following schools: The Heights School, The Oakcrest School, Holy Child, Visitation, The Landon School, Bullis, Georgetown Prep, and Stone Ridge. Other schools are public and shitty. The guy preppies always wear their collars up, plaid shorts crisply ironed, and their j.crew flip flops. For the girls, their collars are also flipped up, their 8" Abercrombie & Fitch skirts low on the waist (revealing their hip bones)and their designer flip flops. In their hair they usually wear a plaid or striped bow. When traveling, preppies usually drive in the following makes of cars (nothing older than a 1995, seriously now) Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, and of course, Jeep Wrangler. For the weekends, the preppies usually congregate at ones large palatial estate and discuss how great our life and friends are.

Since I am a prep, I will tell you everything you will need to know about being a prep and fake preps
For Girls:If you classify yourself as preppy this is what you should have: Polo and Lilly Pulitzer.J.Crew,Eliza B.,C.K. Bradley,Maax, LaCoste,Vineyard Vines,North Face,L.L. Bean etc.
They ALWAYS have numberous amounts of ribbon belts and ribbons in every color. They wear tons pastels, pinks and greens, navys is a defianant, dark greens, purples, reds, yellows, limited black clothing etc.
They have toile bags, Vera Bradley, Longchamp, Herve Chapelier etc. They are always very classy and always look their best. Never should a prep dress skin-revealing or tight, glittery cheap clothes.
For Boys:Boys wear Polo,Vineyard vine ties, boxers and belts.LaCoste is very popular as well.Seersucker pants and imbroidered pants and shorts with crabs, lobsters, whales etc are also worn.True male preps aren't afraid of wearing pink or yellow and sometimes purple.
For all preps:1.POP COLLAR IS A MUST 2.Must play atleast lacrosse, soccer, hockey, polo(if your really that preppy),sailing, basketball(sometimes),golf etc.
Preppy people are always well off but sometimes are not extremely rich but they have to be wealthy. Always a part of the upper-class. The majority of preps are almost always in all lot of times are white. But there are few black preps that I have seen and have class and great taste in clothes. In some cases they drive BMW's,Benz,Jaguar and anything exspensive. Preps don't always go to the Cape and go to Martha's Vineyard. I as a prep, have traveled to London and California. All preps have to be from the East Coast. In northern New Jersey(a breeding ground for preps)is prep-central. Loaded with mansions and a gorgeous downtowns equipped with everything.*If your town you live in doesn't have a really nice downtown, then it isn't a preppy town.
Fake Preps:I strongly dislike it when people classify that they are preppy and they aren't because of these few things
1.A+F,Aeropostle,Old Navy,Gap,American Eagle,Hollister and anything else that I didn't mention under true prep aren't preppy at ALL.
2.They wear tight, glittery, showy clothes. They wear a TON of makeup too and don't pop their collars.
Remember:Preps don't always go to private or boarding schools. I go to a public school and there are a ton of preppy people there. And they sometimes don't belong to a country club(like myself). But my dad does play golf!

a preppy person is what a UK ya would be in america. A preppy gains their name from going to prepatory school, while a ya is called that due to the way they speak (oh, ya, super dahling)-it is taken for granted that a ya went to private school. The main similarities are that they both tend to be affluent (note, they do not have to be mega-rich), they both tend to be old money with big old houses (ya in south east of england, preppy, north east coast of usa), they both tend to have traditional summer houses that have been in the family for generations (ya in highlands of scotland, preppy in places like marthas vineyard), they both have a fashion uniform (a female ya has to wear a pastel pashmina and have long blonde hair, a male ya has to have a gilet and a pink rugby shirt, a preppy basically has to wear ralph lauren with the collar up).
However there are differences, a ya tends to be much less overtly snobby since they belong to an overtly class loving country that will do it for them. a preppy will probably have more money since inheritance tax is destroying the upper class in the UK and therefore the ya culture.
a ya will tend to think of themselves as better than a preppy since they beleive they dont really count because they are not part of an aristocracy, and basically because they are american. a preppy will think they are better than a ya because they probably know they are richer and because they beleive they made their money and did not inherit it (even though it is in fact daddy that made it)

Intelligent, Sophisticated, Stylish, Often Popular; Sometimes Well-Off, but not always, as thought in the general stereotype. Abercombie and Fitch, American Eagle, Gap, etc. are not expensive, as some people think. The aforementioned brands are not really significantly stylish, but are of good quality, nevertheless. And not all preps are stuck up, as thought in the general stereotype. There are variations of preps, just as there are of any other social category of people.
