Nostalgic Progression

In relation to video games: giving the feeling of nostalgia in a series full of nostalgia while keeping the gameplay fresh to the point it'll be remembered as nostalgia in it's own right and not a gimmick.

What is Nostalgic Progression:

-Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime
-Castlevaina, 3, 4, Symphony of the Night
-Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past, Ocarina, Majora's mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess

What isn't:

-Super Mario Sunshin
-Metroid Prime 2 Echos
-Any 3D Castlevaina released to date(6/25/2010)
-Zelda 2, Zelda's Adventure.

Nostalgic Fever

A condition caused by contacting or meeting with people from "back in the day" with whom you grew up, or shared early life experiences which helped shape your personality. This can be brought on by joining Facebook and contacting some old friends, or by attending a Class Reunion of some sort. Usually VERY intense at first, wearing down over the course of a few weeks.

Man, I joined Facebook, and now I got a serious case of Nostalgic Fever.

nostalgia backfire

An event in which someone gets re-acquainted with a favorite song, movie, or other thing from their past, but eventually finds that it only reminds them of the time at which they got back into it.

My junior year of high school, I went up into the attic and found that Super Mario game I used to play when I was, like, 10 years old. But now when I play it all I can think of is how it was the one thing about my high school days that didn't suck. What a total freaking nostalgia backfire.
