A cultural item that at first garners much undeserved attention and then maintains that attention because people need to know what all the attention was about.

Named after the original trump, Donald Trump. Trump mounted a farcical attempt at entering the 2012 presidential race, he was given spurious media attention, and then everyone was analyzing the fact that he was given attention, while conflicted over whether the analysis of the attention was itself undeserved attention.

Some people criticize The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and claim it shouldn’t be in the standard high school curriculum, but no doubt it remains there as a trump.
