Singapore Math Going Endemic

When most K–12 Singapore math writers would find it almost irresistible not to set questions on Covid-19 and its variants, masks, vaccines, and lockdowns, by adding some context to their content in their new manuscripts, unless their publishers think that it is morbid or a bad omen to do so, by rationalizing that the product of two negatives (people’s fear of math and of the virus) is not a positive in this case.

As Singapore reluctantly lives with Covid, it’s understandable that those who had lost loved ones to Covid-19 have reservations about Singapore math going endemic in this new normal.

spaghetti math

Math so easy and 'thin' even the babies slurping up the metaphorical spaghetti can comprehend it. just like they can eat the spaghetti. because its easy as fuck to digest.
examples of this include: Further math and any math below 10th grade level.

Person 1 "I got 90% on my last test!" Person 2 "yeah but you do spaghetti math"

Simcoe math

A neophyte's approach to understanding financial problems using calculations that may result in a wide +/- margin of error. Generally Simcoe math is used to broadly prove a point the user is trying to make, allowing a "rough estimate" to masquerade as a definitive answer.

Named after a region in Canada famous for being satisfied with results which may only have a tenuous connection to the truth.

"Guys—I'm just doing a bit of Simcoe math here on the back of this napkin, and it looks like we have just enough cash left for another round of Warthogs!"

Made-in-Singapore Math

When exam-smart students have near-zero choice but to regurgitate the model solutions promoted by their teachers or tutors, because there is hardly any time for them to think through most brain-unfriendly questions if they want to score a decent grade, much less question the questions.

With so many topics to cover and so little time to master the concepts, teachers and parents have come to terms that the only way for students to minimize failure and to maximize success is to reluctantly embrace made-in-Singapore math.

The Sanitization of Singapore Math

When fertile or fitting real-life or contextual questions and math tidbits or humor in a math textbook, submitted to Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) for approval, are often rejected for politically incorrect reasons, or because the items could potentially be perceived to be linked to politics, race, religion, or sex.

Items like “Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not divide by zero!” and phrases like “beautiful curves,” “immoral algebra,” and “juicy little theorem” are banned without being given valid reasons—aren’t these rejections part of the sanitization of Singapore math to only publish sterilized or sterile contents to satisfy the mathematical wants of a humorously or prudishly challenged audience or readership?

The belief or myth that any country, state, or school that adopts the Singapore math curriculum would have their students' math scores improve significantly.

Mauritius and Rwanda appear to have gained from the Singapore math effect—both countries are economically better off than their bigger resources-rich African neighbors.
