A rookie on a hockey team that everyone always hates. Never picks up the pucks, is a Charlie Conway type of hero in practice and jokes around with everyone even though they hate his guts. A schmelt does not know he is a schmelt which is often the best part of it.

from Yiddish, shmalts, meaning rendered (melted) animal fat; usually chicken fat. Schmaltz is used to make matzo balls.

figuratively: a work of art that is excessively sentimental, sappy or cheesy.

From Yiddish, rendered chicken or goose fat. in east European cooking chicken fat is used as an easy fix to otherwise tasteless cooking. in other words, its a Crowd pleaser.
in jewish slang, Schmalts refers to a tacky, overdone or outright exploitative piece of art or design.

Yiddish. of, pertaining to, or characterized by schmaltz. Overly emotional. Cheesy sentiment, grandiose passion usually accompanied by effusive or overly-demonstrative gesticulations.

Superlative combination of sincerity and sentimentality. Abundance of enthusiasm or excitement. Usually one-sided, always over-the-top. Can be misconstrued as meretricious in nature, though that's not usually the case.
