fugue film

A film or book that has a strong but typically confusing plot, up to the end where it's revealed that much of what the main character(s) and/or audience believed to be true is an illusion of some sort. It was good with Fight Club, but after a while it tends to be disappointing once you realise that it's an age old plot. Examples include Fight Club, The Machinist, Secret Window, Matchstick Men, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

Named after a Dissociative Fugue State of amnesia, in which the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy defines as "One or more episodes of amnesia in which the inability to recall some or all of one's past and either the loss of one's identity or the formation of a new identity occur with sudden, unexpected, purposeful travel away from home.", and further "Dissociative Amnesia" as "An inability to recall important personal information, usually of a traumatic or stressful nature, that is too extensive to be explained by normal forgetfulness."
That movie was alright up until it turned out that the creepy fat guy turned out to be made up in the main characters head. Then I realised it was just another fugue film.

fugue state railroad

A TTRPG campaign where it takes a Railroad approach to setting the actions, but the DM makes no effort to form a coherent story. This makes the players feel like they’ve been blackout drunk for the duration of a session, or like they’ve been in a fugue.
“Man I wish I knew what that one politician guy said to us last session, if it weren’t such a fugue state railroad I’d know what the fuck is happening in this game.”

Fugue-Turkey

1. A classical musician with a clear baroque emphasis regardless of repertoire (eg playing Joplin in baroque meter)

2. A confident musician specializing in baroque era (particularly Bach) music
“Did you hear Davyyd in the practice room? He didn’t tell me he was a fugue-Turkey!”

“What a let-down. The concert was supposed to be indie-pop but the lead singer did all the interludes like a fugue-Turkey.”

Dutch Fugue

A temporary psychotic state of mindless agression. Named for "Dirty" Dutch Coldrell who killed 19 men (including his friend "Cool Hand" McCabe) and wounded 79 others during a 27 hour berserk rage during the Great Outdoor Fight of 1877.

In an interview afterward, Coldrell described his Fugue as, "standin' outside your own body, watchin'. You know you should care... should be down there, but it all seems so terrible... it all seems so wrong... that all you can do is watch from afar while your body takes care a'business. Part of me was horrified that I couldn't seem to control myself. But part a'me wishes I'd never come back, neither."

(pronounciation is identical to the musical term of the same spelling. or 'fju-g')
Bobby went into a Dutch Fugue during his 'Airing Of Grievences' at his family's Festivus dinner and killed both of his parents and three siblings before county Sheriffs were able to neutralize him.
