A term used to describe a person who has been hardened, desensitized, or "animalized" by the ruthless grind of a major city.
Originally
inspired by the protagonist of Mahesh Manjrekar’s 2026 play Animal, a Dattu is someone who arrived in the
urban jungle (like Mumbai) with a suitcase full of innocence and dreams, only to have the system strip them of their humanity. To be a "Dattu" is to have traded your soul for survival instincts. It is the
transition from being a "social human" to a "predatory animal" just to pay the rent.
I remember when Raj first moved here; he used to help
everyone at the station. Now he’s a total Dattu—cold,
calculated, and only looks out for himself. The city really got to him.
