I knew this essay was a mess when I realized I had created a tab monster on my computer. I could barely keep them all straight, and I couldn't wait to hit that juicy, juicy X in the corner of my screen when I was done.
A Shackteau is a humble, weather-beaten, structurally questionable shelter located in a spectacular or highly coveted place—Wales, Jackson Hole, Sun Valley, Crested Butte, coastal Maine, the Alps—where the building itself may be worth almost nothing, but the dirt, view, access, and mythology make it absurdly valuable.
