A choice between earth and sky, light and heavy, the option to float or to sink.
One of the women was laughing, smiling, so enjoying the moment that her feet barely touched the ground, while the other had a negative word for everything, her brows clenched, seeming cemented in place. It was clearly an ether/ore choice and he went toward the light.

Nuclear Family

A family so potentially explosive that no one dares breathe, knowing that a single-word detonation could destroy everyone in its blast radius
They sat at the dinner table, a nuclear family, Mom, Billy and Sue careful to not make eye contact, no one making any move that could detonate their father's explosive rage. Hiroshima would look like a day in the park, in contrast to the inevitable wreckage.

logocide

To kill a word, by misuse, overuse, or, like, just, like, whatever.
I always liked the word 'like'. It indicated positive feelings about someone or something, signified similarity. But when the formerly articulate Jon Stewart, in the first episode of his new show, said "And I'm like, what?" in a stream of verbiage strewn with meaningless 'likes', it was a sign that 'like' had suffered the final act of logocide, as if the dying word, zombified, had finally infected every last logocidal person, regardless of age, education, you know, and I'm like, damn.

Suckerberg Mark

A person targeted by Facebook, who clicks on, answers and falls into every trap.
Clarence fit their profile, answering every bit of bait - the name of his first pet, where he'd met his partner, his favorite color. It was so much fun! Oreos! My first car? A Honda Civic! He was a permanent resident of Suckerberg, the perfect Suckerberg Mark. 'Wait wait, they're asking the last four digits of my SSN in reverse order! Only one in ten can do it! I'm a genius.'

Botocracy

A society in which women are enslaved by artificial notions of physical perfection.
At 23, she was tormented by her reflection. She was getting old. Under the new Botocracy, with President Kardashian setting the pace, she would need to get some work done, fast.

woemanizer

A man who tries to overcome his sorrow and grief with an unending string of women.
Everyone judged him for the number of women who came into and out of his life. It felt to be the only way he could banish his unremitting woe, from losses and pain he could never share. He was a woemanizer, and he alone understood why.

When fifty is the new sixty. When recently healthy and vital people, so exhausted and worn down from Covid, from politics, from the craziness of masks, vaccines, the Big Lie, feel they have lost not just a year but a decade.
Yesterday she was 49. Today was - big whoop - her birthday, and whatever the balloons spelled out, she was sure she must be turning Sifty.
