Yarding

In climbing, yarding is pulling on something with all you’ve got. Most often used to describe pulling on a hold with both hands.

“Don’t yard on that death block, it’s not solid!”
“I was yarding on that nut but it wouldn’t budge, nice placement!”

nut tool

The long metal tool a follower has to use to free their leader’s nuts when they get stuck in a crack. It should be thin (to account for even the smallest nuts), and ideally have a leash so you don’t drop it. It should also have a hook on the working end. On the handle end a flat spot is nice so when you have to hit it hard to remove their nuts, you don’t hurt your hand.

A person with a rack should absolutely own a nut tool.

Also called a pro key. An important part of your traditional rock climbing toolkit.

“Do you have a nut tool? I don’t want to lose nuts on this climb.”

Bushnargle

A mess. Originally referred to tangled rock climbing ropes, but can be used for other chaotic, difficult-to-fix situations as well.

“Don’t climb until I get the bushnargle out of this rope.”
“My coworker caused a whole bushnargle by sending an email to the wrong person.”

Jugging

Ascending a rope using jumars, often on a big wall climb.

“I ended up jugging up like 5 pitches today, I never want to see a jumar again”

Slimper

In rock climbing, a slippery, slopery crimp—the hold you don’t want to use but you have to. You can’t get good purchase on it.

“Dammit! I dry fired on that slimper again”

Edging

Standing on very small rock features with the edges of your climbing shoes. Edging usually takes place on face routes typically feels a bit desperate. It’s best to have aggressive shoes if you’re doing a lot of edging.

“Don’t fall there, you’re in decking territory”
“I know, edging skills or hospital bills”

Slimp

A slippery crimp hold in rock climbing. Something you don’t want to pull on when you’re runout from your last piece of pro, but it’s the only option so chalk up!

“Oh Jesus these hold suck”

*peels off and takes a whipper*
Yells to belayer: “that slimp was so freaking polished!”
