Social media graduation has several definitions. When someone has evolved past the need for social media. This is often due to factors such as financial stability within the majority of the population. Occasionally this happens towards the end of Rumspringa as a last chance to party before going offline permanently (or at the least, no longer using social media). Social media graduation also happens due to factors of age, and having outgrown social media in some form, even if graduate decides to continue to use other social media. When social media graduation happens, online & offline celebrations are common, often happening at the same time. Strictly offline celebrations are common as well. This sort of event can cause paradoxical feelings of intense joy, sadness, loss of friendships, and strengthening of existing ones. It can be as important to some people as a high school, college or university graduation, depending on their background & culture.
Synonymous terms include, but are not limited to: Social networking graduation, insert website and / or app here graduation, internet graduation, social media retirement. This is not that same as quitting social media out of frustration, or a social media break.
