expendable crew member
The one that will definitely not survive. Taken from the TV series "Star Trek", which frequently introduces a new character (often wearing a red shirt), who dies early on, showing the power of that episode's enemy force. This is character is killed so that the regulars, Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Uhura, Chekov, and Scotty, can all remain unharmed.
Good thing James wore his red shirt, because if we have to throw someone to the wolves tonight, it's gonna be our expendable crew member.

n. a grasp that comes up empty, v. to reach out and attempt to grasp something that is totally unattainable (so-named for Hillary Clinton's annoying pursuit of the Democratic primary long after Barack Obama had realistically sealed the deal).
noun: Stop extending your hillareach. I'll get it for you.

Someone who is asked to attend an event at the last minute, replacing an original participant that dropped out at the last minute.
Me: Cheryl, would you like to go to the opera tonight? Debbie couldn't make it.
Cheryl: Oh, so I'm your pinch hitter? Sure, I'll go.

An American president in office from 2001 thru 2009, so nick-named due to his resemblance to an 80s TV character of the same name from the hit TV series "Life Goes On".
