algeria

a nation in northern africa along the medditeranian. most of its people live along the coast, as the interior is as a barren desert. inhabited by people of berber decent, it had a history of piracy (the barbary coast). in the 1800s, the french colonized this place and a very very bloody war for independence occured in the 1950s. the democratic government has had problems since then, including assassinations, coups, single party rule, and terrorism. while the nation currently elects its leaders in what are considered free elections, its an open secret that politicians are subsurviant to miliatry leaders.

turkmenistan

an asian nation that everyone seemed to trample on throughout history: alexander the great, genghas kahn, the turks, the soviets. the nation finally became independent after soviet collapse, but things got no better. instead, a former communist big shot, a mr. nayazov, took power and created a crazy cult of personality. he recently died, so things are pretty unstable.
in turkmenistan, nayazov's cult of personality forced his picture to be on everything from cereal boxes to watches.

one of the poor west african country's that used to be european slave raiding areas. former french colony, it's been ruled by the same dictatorial pres. ondimba for 40 years. oil is bringing wealth to this country, but that can't solve it's problems right now.

a little rectangle of land in africa plus an island off the coast. a former spanish colony, it is currently known for an extremely unstable faux democracy. it has perhaps the most unfree press in the world, with newspapers banded.

one of the carribbean's many tourist countries. a former british colony, it was the last nation in the region to actually attempt to keep its sugar industry. eventually, it succumbed to pressure and is now just a tourist destination for americans, canadians, and euros.

tajikistan

a country NOT in the middle east, despite being heavily islamic. this asian nation was one of the soviet republics that became independent in 1990. after it became sovergn, it plunged into civil war. the nation has rich natural resources and is a leading cotton and aluminum producer. unfortunately, it is currently a faux democracy, ruled by a former soviet official.

vanuatu

a little pacific island company, vanuatu was colonized by the spanish, french, and british over its history. it became independent in 1980, and it has seen coups and countercoups ever since. vanuatu is the ultimate tax haven and it has little business regulations. questionable companies tend to incorporate here.
kazaa is officially registered in vanuatu because this nation's gov't doesn't question its actions.
