Sharksploitation is a subgenre of exploitation film that involves sharks or shark attacks. The genre emerged in the wake of the 1975 film Jaws and its sequels.
Other examples of sharksploitation films include the Sharknado film series (2013-2018), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus (2009), and Dinoshark (2010). A documentary about the subgenre, titled Sharksploitation, was released in 2023.

Benchley became a full-time marine activist and speaker, advocating for shark conservation for the rest of his life.
