The outermost of Uranus's 13 recognized planetary rings, consisting of an extremely broad and diffuse distribution of fine dust particles.

The Mu ring, originally designated R/2003 U 1, was discovered through observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope and announced in December 2005.

Its brightness peaks approximately 97,700 kilometers from Uranus's center, and the ring extends across roughly 17,000 kilometers in radial width, making it the broadest of the planet's recognized rings.

Unlike the predominantly dark inner rings of Uranus, the Mu ring exhibits an unusual blue color, believed to result from the scattering properties of its exceptionally small particles, which likely contain substantial amounts of water ice.

The ring is closely associated with Mab, a small moon orbiting within its brightest region.

Scientists believe that impacts from micrometeoroids striking Mab may eject particles into space, continually supplying the ring with fresh material.

The Mu ring is an important example of the relationship between small planetary moons and diffuse dusty rings, demonstrating how impact processes can produce and maintain structures extending thousands of kilometers through space.
"The Mu ring is the outermost known ring of Uranus, forming an enormous, faint cloud of bluish dust that may be continually replenished by particles ejected from the small moon Mab."
