Like the submarine races, whale fights are euphamisms for making out or fornicating in one's car. Often times, the girl believes that she is actually going to the "whale fights", but one thing leads to another and the whale gets "harpooned"

Guy: "Hey, you wanna go watch the whale fights?"
Girl: "Sure, I wonder who will win."

15min later-

Girl: "I can't see any whales. Who is winning?"
Guy: "Just keep watching (and puts his arm across the girl)."

The rest is obvious...
