"Pitchers and Catchers" is used as a shorthand term for the beginning of spring training in professional baseball. Since the titular positions are the first ones to report to spring training this is sometimes seen as the beginning of the baseball season.

In a relationship between two men, the pitcher would be defined as the partner who is throwing the bat down the catchers hole. The catchers is the receiver of the pitchers bat as defined in the above sentence.
