Otherkin is a group of people who believe that in some way, they are not completely human. Some think they are a reincarnation of mythological beings, aliens, animals native to this planet, etc. Others think they've descended from ancient elvish or fae bloodlines and what have you. Probably most rarely, even some believe that they are existing on this plane in their "trueform" but under a "seeming," which from what I know is some sort of magical disguise.
While a vast majority of 'kin are most likely vying for attention and many may indeed be delusional, there are those who lead quite normal lives and are quite happy with the way things are.
"I never would have guessed, but my friend is an otherkin. She seemed so normal, too."
"The otherkin just wanted a place to relax, but it seemed that even on their own turf the flamers would not give them peace."

A person who has inherited the traits of something of another being. This can be any of the few mentioned, as well as others. These traits are usually recognized during times of great upheaval in the individual's life, known as an Awakening.

Recently, due to the popularity and drive for belonging, many new 'kin' have arisen. Because of the popularity of the idea, and because of the increase in roleplaying, many of these new kin are false, and merely imitating it in order to find acceptance in a group. In other words, they are chasing a trend to feel part of something. These imitators are usually the members of the otherkin community that tend to give true otherkin the bad reputation many of the members on this website have given them. Also, those that become overly defensive and hostile contribute to this, and do not benefit any members of the community by making subtle threats.

Most otherkin live totally normal lives, with jobs, families and anything else a normal person enjoys. They simply live with the knowledge of being something more than just a regular being, and that leads them to discover what it is about them that is so different. The otherkin that gain bad reputations are not the norm, and others of the kin community should not be judged by the actions of those that gain notice.
1.) The kid on the forum claimed to be Posiden, as an otherkin. Both kin and non-kin alike knew he was an idiot.

2.) James always felt a desire in his heart for things beyond what he felt was real and normal, and discovered his otherkin traits through a difficult Awakening.

3.) People that mock otherkin are only insulting those who can't rise above petty insults, who are usually the least sincere about their experiences.

1. An umbrella term for involuntarily and non-physically identifying as something other than human, or as a fictional human, similar to alterhuman.

2. Identifying involuntarily and non-physically as a non-human creature which has never at any point in time existed on earth, such as a dragon or an alien.
John is otherkin. He's a dragon.

When a mentally unstable person has not been properly hospitalized and given medication, and has come to believe they are not human, superior to others, or somehow linked to an animal/fictional being spiritually. Like most batshit crasy individuals, their shit filled minds are impossible to flush clean and will deny any aspects of being human.

If encountered in real life, quickly call the proper institution in your area, and the men in white coats will gladly give them the desperate shock treatment they need.
Otherkin: IM A DRAGON!
Rational person: No, you're human...
Otherkin: STFU hyooman, before I burn you with my fiery breath!
Rational person: Idiot.. walks away

Coming up with a consistent definition for Otherkin is near impossible, even when collaborating with only Otherkin. I recently had an argument in the Otherkin Wikipedia article (a mature one), as they want to merge it with Therianthropy. Therianthropy is the belief that they are, specifically, in one way or another, animals (correct me if I'm wrong, Therans). Not all Otherkin believe so. For example, I have, for all but a select few of my lives, been pretty much everything but any animal-related 'kin. Therefore, I found the definition unjustified. Many will agree. I brought this up because a number of Otherkin supported that merging. Of course, those Otherkin were Dragons, wolves, and the like. Truth be told, Otherkin can be just as ignorant as humans. It's not fair to single out humans, which would be just as those Otherkin who choose to do so (not pointing anyone out - simply making the point for those who read this).
From a scientific standpoint, however, Otherkin are met with more problems than any religious group on the planet. A quote from the Wikipedia article:
Otherkin Wikipedia Article wrote:
According to diagnosis criteria put forth by mental health professionals, the belief that one is an animal or can be turned into an animal is termed clinical lycanthropy5, a delusion of varying severity and significance.
This is, of course, because those "mental health professionals" take part in their religions, so their diagnostic of themselves would be severely bias.
So it'll be quite a while before everyone can agree on what Otherkin really is, an whether or not they truly exist. One of my goals is to find some way to change that - but looking at how things are going, that will not be any time soon.
By the way, the most commonly used definition of otherkin: Otherkin are races of beings that do not have a native origin on earth. They are often discussed in myths and legends, and are not regarded to be real by the modern scientific and historic community. These include the popular types of kin (slang for Otherkin), such as Dragons, Vampires, Elves, Fairies, etc.
Anne realised she was otherkin because she had painful memories of her family being killed in another life, as another being not on Earth.

Otherkin are wacky furries who hate the environment and have a marked inability to use proper spelling, punctuation, etc. If they are here for a purpose, that purpose would seem to be to inspire the building of more prisons for the criminally insane.

Otherkin insist that they are not human, so, though still illegal, hunting them for sport should not be considered murder.
"Jeff, I bagged a dragon and two vampires today! How about you?"

"It wasn't a great day for hunting otherkin, Rob. All I got was this lousy half-elf, half-angel."

They tend to hang out with animals more than humans and they feel a spirtual connection with animals.(there is really no connection it is really their warped mind)
They also beleve they were once an animal in there preveious life (what the hell makes them so damn sure, your memory of your previous life does not come with you)
Understanding otherkin is like trying to understand an autistic child, you will never understand these people.
