1. The tendency or act of abruptly changing (or attempting to shift) the topics of discussion or a meeting to a larger, containing category.

2. An abrupt attempt to shift topics to ones only broadly or peripherally related to the original ones.

My companion's constant lumpismo finally sidetracked the whole point of our talk.
