in response to drco:

First off, there are Hunters and then there are Jumpers.
Hunters is where the horse and rider jump a course and the judging is based on accuracy, grace, and elegance.
Jumpers is where the horse and rider memorize a course of about 10 jumps and remember a jump off of about 6 jumprs. They are given a reasonable time limit to complete the course without any faults(knocking rails, refusing jumps, falling off, time penalties). If the horse and rider make it through the round without any faults then they jump the jump off.
The horse and rider that jump the jump off the fastest with the least amount of faults win.

And let me tell you, most of these horses aren't "dead broke" except for the A circuit horses that cost $80,000 end even then they aren't.
I hate so much how the general public does't consider horseback riding a sport and they think riding is just "sitting there and letting the horse do all the work".
Ha, NO! I'd like to see those people that think riding is a breeze on my horse. Freddy would have them on the ground in a heartbeat.
Don't say its not a sport until you actually try it.

Horseback riders deserve more respect.
Hunter jumpers is one of the many horseback riding disciplines.

The style of horseback riding where the rider is required to look as pretty as possible while riding a dead broke horse. To compete in the larger competitions a snobby attitude has to be developed. Most riders find that inserting a stick up their ass helps tremendously. The bigger the competition, the larger the stick that must be inserted up the arse.

Symptoms of a hunter jumper rider include: heels jammed down far enough that they are useless for any reason not cosmetic, a painfully arched back, a perpetual condescending scowl, and daddy over by the car acting as groom and dishing out money.

Symptoms of a hunter jumper horse include: a double bridle (heaven forbid the hunter jumper rider try to control a horse with a snaffle!), puny hindquarters and huge shoulders from hauling itself around on its forhand, and a dull expression from having to do the same thing again and again.
Please kill me if I ever decide to do hunter jumper.

A hard working equestrian. Most of the time is riding a wicked slow horse or pony thats really hard to get moving. The rider has to put all their leg muscle and ride a course of jumps and make everything look like a piece of cake. You have your heels down(Like you would anytime you are jumping!)and a RELAXED posistion. You need to make whatever you are doing look simple. You have to have a lot of leg muscle and have a good attitude. Hunter jumper is one of the many great divisions in the horse showing world.
