depends on the wind

Depends on the wind is and old Canadian East Coast / Maritime expression which denotes that the final result of whatever situation that is being refered to will depend on the resolution of other factors and influences that have not yet been finalized.
Sometimes unforseen variables will have such an impact on things to come that it is foolish to make a prediction on the ultimate outcome until more information is available .

In other words, it is too early to say for sure what will happen .
EX 1 ;

" do you think we'll be able to take the boat out today ? "

- " Depends on the wind . "

Ex 2 ;

" So are you gonna hook up with that hot hootchie mamma or what ? "

- " That, my friend, depends on the wind "
