A person who is not quite a friend yet but more than an acquaintance. You take part in light-hearted chat and would most probably only talk to them if you were with a group of people; the same goes for hanging out with them. You also might say Hi to them when meeting in the street, but you wouldn't stop and chat.
Dave: Can you get Fred to lend me Spiderman 3 on DVD? I don't really know him that well.

Gary: Hmmm... I'm not sure if I can ask him yet, we're really only social-colleagues at the moment. Ask Kyle though, he was at friend level last time I checked.

Similar to the Friend Zone, except in a platonic work environment .

That person you talk to in the office but have no aspirations to be friends with outside of work hours.

To clarify this is one step below the Friend Zone
In the office at closing time on a Friday

Fred: So what are you doing this weekend?
Jane: ah, you know just meeting up with my friends and doing other cool stuff with my friends.. so ya I will see you on Monday.. at work.

That feeling when you're sick and tired of a coworker, often accompanied by the vain hope that they get a job somewhere else and leave.
After that shitty email from Alex earlier, I'm feeling a lot of colleague fatigue this afternoon.

Someone you have never met IRL (in real life) but have corresponded with online and therefore have a "digital" relationship with.

Often abbreviated simply as "DC".

ETYMOLOGY:
I've not been able to determine where or when this term was first used, but I was made aware of it from reading a blog entry at www.My-CreativeTeam.com

Might have originally meant to describe those you've ONLY corresponded with via online text through SNS's (social networking sites), internet forums (discussion or message boards), E-mail, IM's (instant messaging), etc... but seems to have also grown to include those you correspond with via voice through VOIP lines (as in Skype or broadband phones), cell phones, or landline phones.

I am a real estate agent and have lots of digital colleagues over on ActiveRain.com where we all interact with each other for venting, brainstorming, advice, and business referrals.

We have the confidence to refer our clients to each other because we've built trust through ongoing, online relationships with each other by blogging, comments, and private messages back and forth even though we're all in different states and provinces and might never meet each other face to face.

A workplace cohort who has taken it upon herself to take on the role of a nightmare sister, finding ways to endlessly embarrass, harass, prank and annoy you to the point of near-insanity.
When I wake up some mornings I find myself breaking out in a cold sweat just imagining the weird and unexpected things my nightmare sister colleague might do to me that day.
