Viperdropping 

The practice of putting one's ear against a snake hole in order to hear if anyone within a hundred mile radius is talking about you.

Legend has it this was once a common belief, if not practice, in West Texas. Many doubt its validity, yet few dare to put their ears against snake holes to test it.
