Tyranny of Reality
The rhetorical and social enforcement of a single, supposedly “real” description of the world, dismissing alternative perspectives as delusional, ideological, or out of touch. Under this tyranny, whoever claims to speak for “reality” gains the power to silence others: “You’re not living in the real world,” “That’s just wishful thinking,” “Facts don’t care about your feelings.” The tyranny hides that “reality” is always interpreted through frameworks, and that what counts as real is often what serves the powerful. It shuts down imagination, critique, and collective vision by presenting the status quo as the only possible reality.
Example: “He dismissed her proposal for universal healthcare as ‘unrealistic’ without engaging the evidence—tyranny of reality, using the claim of realism to foreclose political imagination.”
