Tyranny of Debunking

A cultural practice where the act of debunking (exposing false or exaggerated claims) becomes an end in itself, applied indiscriminately and often to trivialise or silence sincere beliefs. Under the tyranny of debunking, every non‑scientific claim—from spiritual experiences to alternative medicine to personal intuition—is met with aggressive scepticism, mockery, or demands for “proof.” The debunker feels righteous, but the effect is to crush curiosity, dismiss lived experience, and create an atmosphere where only the most cynical, reductionist views are allowed. It is scepticism without humility.
Example: “He interrupted her story about a meaningful dream to explain why dreams were ‘just neuron firing.’ The tyranny of debunking had made him unable to hear anything but error.”
