Toast Magoo

A state of seemingly being completely finished, ruined or in serious trouble, only for hindsight to reveal that the situation was misjudged and you weren’t actually as doomed as first thought. Derived from “toast”, meaning finished or done for, and inspired by the famously short-sighted cartoon character Mr. Magoo Mr. Magoo.

Essentially: you thought you were toast, but you couldn’t see the full picture.

When you’re convinced you’re toast, only for hindsight to reveal you were being short-sighted. You weren’t toast. You were Toast Magoo.

Example:
“I thought getting dropped from that project had ended my career, but I landed an even bigger one the following week. Turns out I was Toast Magoo.”
