Thoreauvian Progressivism

A progressive politics filtered through Thoreau’s scepticism of industrial progress and institutional reform. Thoreauvian progressivism supports social justice, environmental protection, and democratic participation, but insists that change must begin with personal transformation and civil disobedience, not just legislation. It distrusts large organisations, including progressive ones, and emphasises localism, voluntary simplicity, and direct action. Progress is measured not by GDP or technological advance, but by increased capacity for wildness, self‑determination, and resistance to conformity.
Example: “She campaigned for renewable energy while refusing to use the grid—Thoreauvian progressivism: fighting for systemic change with one hand and building a solar cabin with the other.”
