The Straw Hat Effect is when someone compliments something they secretly dislike, simply because it's too obvious for them to not comment on.
Kate: "Nice hat!"
Bob: "Thanks!"
Jane: "You really like that guy's hat?"
Kate: "No it's super ugly and obnoxious"
