Soviet Recycling
When one "gifts" items generally aquired at no cost to loved ones instead of throwing them away. Examples include pens from various offices with the business name on the side. Free calendars. Random coupons. Promotional keychains. This allows the giver to feel generous and avoid the discomfort of feeling they've wasted such treasures by throwing them away while simultaneously being thanked for the job of discarding the unwanted rubbish.
It is a sly combination of utility and Slavic guilt. Brilliant.

Oh man, uncle Boris needs to stop stealing pens from his doctors. He sent me home with 9 from his urologist in last week's blessing from the soviet recycling program.
