A meaningless action that basically means that the individual has no intention of resolving an issue but wants to put forward the impression that it is being dealt with
At Prime Ministers "Question Time" when challenged on the award of pension to Sir Fred Goodwin, Gordon Brown replied "don't worry, I'm putting a call out"
