Internet Studies
An interdisciplinary field that studies the internet in its totality—as a technical infrastructure, a cultural space, a political arena, and an economic engine. Internet studies draws on media studies, sociology, history, law, and computer science to understand how the internet has evolved, how it is governed, how it shapes everyday life, and how it intersects with global inequalities. It examines everything from network architecture and standards to online communities, digital rights, and the political economy of data. Unlike social media studies, which focuses on platforms, internet studies looks at the broader ecosystem.
Example: “Internet studies research revealed how the privatization of domain governance in the 1990s set the stage for today’s platform monopolies—showing that technical decisions were also political ones.”
