Truly the Rodney Dangerfield on RPGS. It gets no respect.
But for those in the know, it's the other long-running JRPG series that is better than Final Fantasy.
With only 9 games in the series. Despite having started in 1986!

Probably the worst Japanese Role Playing series in existence. It has archaic, simplistic and shallow gameplay, while utterly lacking in any sort of redeeming values, with not even the storyline or characters ever being any good. The lack of evolution is just disturbing, and when the series does try and change, it is both minimal and late to the party. Dragon Quest is to other JRPGs what Dynasty Warriors is to Ninja Gaiden and other action titles.
Honestly, I never understand why gamers lower their standards so much for Dragon Quest. This is a series that hasn't offered gaming or gamers anything relevant in almost two decades. Would anyone outside of Japan even care if the Dragon Quest series was discontinued? The only people who would are two minorities - the fake Dragon Quest fans who only like the series now because it is on Nintendo platforms again, and the people who just generally have atrocious taste in everything.
Ultimately, Dragon Quest is just really awful. Having to sit through these games is like drilling needles into your eyes. I swear anyone who sits through a Dragon Quest game in its entirety must be a Masochist. And people wonder why Japan has such a high suicide rate? There really should be a law against hyping Dragon Quest games.

A video game made by Square Enix. Also the most slept on game of this generation. Smash fans have begun to hate this game because the protagonist of this game (and other Dragon Quest games) got into Smash over some shitty character like Waluigi and also because of Akira Toriyama's artstyle.
Guy: Oh, boy! I just got Dragon Quest XI!
Smash fan: NOOOOO! THEY STOLE *insert character here*'S SMASH SPOT?! BOYCOTT SQUARE ENIX!
Guy: Uh...you okay, there?

An old school style RPG released by Square Enix in 2005. Part of the Dragon Warrior series. A really good game.

The only character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that has the slowest fucking aerials in the game, grab range of a newborn, and a 1 in 8 chance to be a top tier.
"Hey who do you play in Smash?"
"Oh, the Hero From Dragon Quest."
"Uhhhhh, what other games do you have?"
"Oh, the Hero From Dragon Quest."

A remake of the 1988 JRPG Dragon Quest III released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC in November 2024. In the months leading up to its release, the game became controversial for its censorship of the late Akira Toriyama's character designs and the removal of gendered terms when referring to the protagonist. The controversy reached its peak when a viral interview with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Hori revealed that the changes were made solely to comply with Western regulations, coupled with developer and publisher Square Enix's attempts to scrub the video from the Internet. Upon release, the game sold moderately well but was poorly received by many fans of the series due to the aforementioned changes.
Everyone who was involved in censoring Mr. Toriyama's work for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake needs to apologize at his grave.
