When a surfer decides not to take off on a wave and backstrokes with his/her arms to keep from being sucked over the falls. This is common with beginner surfers who end up getting in the way and wasting waves for others.

Look at that kook backpaddle off these waves, what is he doing surfing at this beach?

Incorrect spelling of backpedaling, used by commenters and then justified by using an unreliable source.

It's understandable. I accidentally used backpaddle instead of backpedal. But I don't want to admit that I'm wrong.

A person who makes a bold statement, then, upon reflection decides that they can't stand behind their reactive decision and does a flip-flop. The true backpedaler will carefully choose an alternate opinion designed to mask their original panic.

1. We have to re-evaluate our stance! This new development is going to kill us!

2. I *meant* that this new development may be strategically significant and we should evaluate the opportunities. :)

disingenuous method of returning to earlier arguments or completely changing their methodical approach after their core argument has been refuted or debunked to avoid being held accountable. a good example of people who backpaddle are schrödinger's douchebag's.

Backpeddling

Trying to take back something said or done, usally done by altering it or changing it, in an attempt to change a viewpoint or to save face. The term backpeddling refer to the motion someone does on a bike to use a brake, moving the legs in another direction, sometimes going nowhere.

1: You know I've always really liked you.
2: I have a boyfriend!
1: I didnt know you had a boyfriend. When I said I really like you I just meant you were cool and...
2: Why are you backpeddling?!
